WAŠIW WAGAYAY MAŊAL Wašiw Wagayay Maŋal (the house where Washo is spoken) also know as WWM or the Language Program was first started in 1993 as an Immersion School, at which time our elders envisioned a total Immersion School but unfortunately it didn’t work out. In 2003 the WWM Board members decided to just get a program going and try to save our Language and culture. The purpose of WWM is to ensure that each community has a Language Program and that as many community members have access to a place to go and learn our language, stories, songs and also what it means to be Wašišiw. We utilize our Tribal elders who are fluent in our language and know our traditional ways. Our schedule is:
Carson: Monday and Tuesdays, 6 pm at the Carson Colony Gym in the kitchen Dresslerville: Thursdays, 5:30 pm for beheziŋ; 6 pm we start the older or more experience speakers, usually we have a potluck. These classes are held at the new D-ville Community Building Huŋa lel ti: Wednesdays, 5:30 pm at the WIEC, always potluck Stewart: Wednesday, 6 pm at the Head Start bldg, always potluck We also provide the tutoring for High School students who want to learn Wašiw as their 2nd language credit. We made presentation on our language and culture for organizations, schools and special events; interpret phases for individuals, help with research papers. Our staff will help in any way that we can.
