The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California is a federally recognized, self-governing tribe headquartered in Gardnerville, Nevada. It was organized pursuant to the Indian Reorganization Act of June 18, 1934, as amended. The tribal government has jurisdiction over trust and allotments in both Nevada and California, with additional tribal trust parcels located in Alpine, Placer, Sierra, Douglas, Carson and Washoe Counties. The Washoe Tribe is governed by a Tribal Council and a Chairwoman/Chairman. The Tribal Council consists of 12 representatives from the Washoe Tribal Community Councils. Each community council sends two permanent representatives to foster their voices in the governmental process. The communities are: Carson Colony, Dresslerville Community, Off-Reservation, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, Stewart Community, and Woodfords Community. The Tribal Council members are responsible for the future of the Tribe and providing for the cultural preservation of the Washoe history and culture. The Chairmanship is responsible for the daily operations of the Tribe. He/she represents the Tribe’s interests in State and National politics and works with other state and federal agencies to achieve progress for the Tribe as a whole. Tribal Council meets monthly to discuss issues, vote on resolutions, and hear the Washoe people during sessions. The council sessions are recorded by the Secretary/Treasurer. Questions and comments about the Washoe governing process can be directed to the Vice-Chairman at (775) 265-8600 |
