What is Native TANF?

The Native TANF program provides temporary aid and services to Native American families that are at risk of welfare dependency. The program focuses on services that strengthen families, prepare workers for jobs and enable recipients to achieve self-sufficiency.

Who is Eligible to receive services from Washoe Native TANF?

• In California, enrolled members or descendants of a federally recognized tribe,

descendants of the California Judgment Roll or an American Indian tribal member

with at least one Native American child living in the service area.

• In Nevada, services are limited to members or descendants of the Washoe Tribe.

• A family includes at least one Native child (natural, step or adopted) who is under the age of 18

that lives in a household with a Native or non-Native single parent family,

two-parent, family, or caretaker relative.

• Have a total family income of less than 200% of the federal poverty guidelines for cash assistance.

• Eligible expectant mothers may become eligible for services in the third trimester of pregnancy.

Our Overall Goal: Advance the health, safety, and well-being of the Native American people

Our Objective: Promote economic and social well-being for individuals, families and communities

 The goals of the Washoe Native TANF Program are to:

1. Provide assistance to needy families so that children may be cared for in their own homes;

2. Reduce the dependency of needy parents by promoting job preparation, work and marriage;

3. Prevent and reduce the incidence of out-of-wedlock pregnancies; and

4. Encourage the formation and maintenance of two-parent families.

5. Provide services in a culturally appropriate way.

6. Strengthen Native families and empower them to be self-sufficient.
